Buffalo, NY (WBEN) -- How was Ralph "Bucky" Phillips able to elude police for so long in the biggest manhunt in New York State history?
New details are emerging about what Phillips told investigators just after his sentencing in late December of 2006.
In a published report by the Albany Times-Union, Phillips reportedly told police he was able to survive during the spring and summer of 2006 by using a "network of family and friends" and by breaking into homes to shower and eat. Phillips is said to have suggested that using "fixed-post" troopers was a bad idea because they could be seen from a mile away, especially at night.
The reports goes on the say Phillips criticized police tactics, and confessed to getting so close to troopers' cars on one moonless night that he coud hear them chatting about the Buffalo Bills.
"All you have to do...(is) go between cars and escape."
Phillips, who turns 47 this month, is currently serving life in prison for killing state trooper Joseph Longobardo, and injuring two others.
