Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Grills!



As we prepare for the unofficial start of the summer, many of us will be throwing down the grilling gauntlet and cooking up everything from apps to sides to entrees and even sweet treats on the grill.

My favorite barbecued dishes are salmon, corn on the cob and pineapple. Toss some of that grilled pineapple over vanilla ice cream and you have a quick and easy dessert your guests won’t soon forget.
 
Here are a few fun food facts from Grill Master.com as you gear up for the long weekend:
                       
  • 81% of US households own a grill
  • The top three days for grilling? You probably could’ve guessed them – Fourth of July (75%), Memorial Day (65%) and Labor Day (55%).
  • Curious how much propane you have left? Weigh the tank! Most tanks weigh around 17 – 19 pounds, so the difference is how much fuel you got left.
  • Northeasterners are actually the biggest barbecuers in the U.S.A. North Central, Southern and Western round out the top four.
  • President Lyndon B. Johnson was the first to host a BBQ at the White House. The featured menu item? Texas-style barbecued ribs.
  • Throwing burgers and hot dogs on the grill? You’re grilling up the first and fourth most grilled foods; steak snags number two with the always popular chicken taking bronze.
The most commonly grilled side dish is corn, followed by other vegetables, and potatoes.

Hickory barbeque sauce is favored, then mesquite, honey, and tomato based. In homemade barbeque sauces, garlic is almost always found in the recipe, as is brown sugar.

After aluminum foil, the preferred barbeque tools are long handed tongs, clean brushes, and spatulas.

As we enjoy good food with our families and friends, let’s also take time to thank the men and women who have served our country and those who wear the uniform today. I salute them today and every day and never take their sacrifice for granted.

MMMMM Charcoal
I don't think there is any comparison between charcoal and propane- charcoal IS BBQ. That smoky, rich flavor can not be beat. We grill year round but, more often in nice weather. I love a great burger on the grill- the only red meat I eat. I also love Dinosaur BBQ sauce- roasted garlic honey. There are no artificial ingredients added and has only 35 calories for 2 TBS. tpo

Corn on the grill
Tell Samdy Beach corn noblest are tasty on the grill sprinkle with fresh ground pepper and BBQ sauce.

Love veggies
We put veggies on the grill year round. They taste so good when grilled. Even the kids love them

Planks of marinated eggplant
my favorite thing is eggplant steaks on the grill. Add some goat cheese and a crusty roll and you have a meal! Love your column!

No dogs for me!
With the latest research linking Hot Dogs to cancer (along with previously frozen red meat), I'm skipping the dogs...(not that I would ever eat one anyway). I'm going for Veggie and Quinoa Burders on the grill! Keep up the great job Brenda! ~RR~
