Absentee Votes Begin To Be Tallied

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Absentee Ballots are being counted in the close race to decide who will challenge Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard in the general election.

Democratic Chair of the Erie County Board of Elections Dennis Ward says both Dick Dobson and Bert Dunn have a good chance of coming out on top.

"The percentage results in this race are now 50/50" Ward said. "If everything breaks the same way the machine tally would, 50/50, only 20 votes out of a few thousand is a miniscule amount."

Ward says that the ballot counting will most likely not get finished today, and it may take another week before we know the final tally. "We certainly aren't going to finish it today. There's some attorney conflict issues that I'm scheduling, and we may not be able to get back to it until next week, so whatever we do today may only be a part of the district, and we may have to wait another week before we complete it."

Ward is just one of many people overseeing the ballot count. Each candidate is represented by an attorney and staff, and many Board Of Elections staff members assist the count.

The counting of the ballots is open to the public, and can be found on the third floor of the Board of Elections building on West Eagle Street downtown.
