Arnold Reconsiders Ending Senate Race; Cites Extramarital Affair

(WBEN) Gia Arnold, the Holley businesswoman who had been preparing a Republican primary challenge in the 62nd Senate district, is stepping aside for now, after publicly admitting to an extra-marital affair.

Arnold announced early Wednesday she would end her active campaign, but reconsidered that laster in theday Leaving the campaign would clear the way for North Tonawanda Mayor Robert Ort to take his party's nomination, and mount a race against Democrat  .Johnny Destino in November . Destino is a former Republican who lost to retiring State Senator George Maziarz in a 2012 primary

" I have made personal decisions that have ultimately resulted in the necessity of my stepping down from the campaign, " the Arnold statement (below) says. " I participated in an extramarital affair beginning in August of this year. It was an excuse for an escape from an already declining marriage. I cannot regret the decisions I have made, but I can admit to being happier presently than before."

Ortt was tapped earlier this year to run in place of Maziarz, who announced his retirement just as US Attorney Preet Bharara sent subpoenas to his campaign staff, looking at spending.  The Albany Times-Union reports the federal investigation is reviewing "dozens" of payments to the family of Maziarz's longtime reelection committee treasurer, Laureen Jacobs, as well as tens of thousands of dollars in itemized checks made out to cash that were never reported.

"Anyone who has ever been involved in politics knows the importance of putting family first.  I respect Ms. Arnold's decision to focus on her family at this time and wish them all the best," Ortt said in a prepared statement.

Arnold released the following statement on her senate campaign's Facebook page early Wednesday:

It is with sincerest apologies that I must step away from actively campaigning this election cycle.

I have appreciated all of the support, encouragement, and donations along the way and hope to continue the relationships that I have made further.

I can only hope that district 62 will be led in Albany by a strong, Constitutional, and honest servant this coming year.

Any money left in my campaign account will be donated to a local charity of majority vote on my Facebook page.

Any events I was to attend will be canceled and not rescheduled.

I have made personal decisions that have ultimately resulted in the necessity of my stepping down from the campaign.

I participated in an extramarital affair beginning in August of this year. It was an excuse for an escape from an already declining marriage. I cannot regret the decisions I have made, but I can admit to being happier presently than before.

It is for my ex husband, my children, my family and friends that I must publicly admit to my actions as I believe honesty and integrity are of utmost importance in life.

I hope that all I have disappointed will understand that I am only human and imperfect. I will be available for public comment and want to make available my cell phone number so that any constituent that may want to speak with me has that ability.

Thank you again.
