Buffalo, NY (BPD / Chief Dennis Richards) -- Buffalo Police have arrested a suspect in the October 31 stabbing death of 19-year-old Jacob Herbert of Clarence.
Homicide detectives arrested 28-year-old Todd R. Heatley of Main Street in Buffalo and charged him with one count of second-degree murder. Chief of Detectives, Dennis Richards tells WBEN both men had attended a large house party that evening in the 100-block of Lisbon Avenue.
"[The party] had been broken up by the police, and people were dispersed," said Richards, "but people continued to come back to the house, and at about 4:30 on Saturday morning there was an altercation."
It appears, says Richards, that Heatley stabbed Herbert multiple times as a result of that dispute.
Richards credits a nearby police surveillance camera with providing detectives crucial evidence that led to Heatley's arrest.
"There's a camera on Cordova and Lisbon that was instrumental in capturing what we believe will be evidence at a later date."
Richards could not elaborate on what, exactly, the videotape captured. "The camera project that has been undertaken in the city has been successful in the past, and this, again, continues to be a tool that the police department makes use of... in reviewing tapes, many times there's clues as to what takes place at a particular time," he said.
Richards said it is still premature to speculate what the motive for the murder was.
