Bid For NCAA Championships In Western New York

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - It may seem like we're a long way from a championship event at the First Niagara Center or Ralph Wilson Stadium, but the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is aiming to make sure fans can see just that in the coming years.

The conference placed bids to host the Frozen Four hockey championship at the First Niagara Center downtown, and the quarterfinal rounds of the Division One lacrosse championship at the Ralph.

Canisius college Director of Athletics Bill Maher thinks the lacrosse game would attract a good amount of fans considering the proximity to southern Ontario and the amount of lacrosse fans in Western New York. "We would hope that we could generate eight to ten thousand fans for that, and we think it would be a good test to see if the market would draw. Certainly we hope for significantly more, but out budget and our goals have been built on about ten thousand fans" Maher said.

Buffalo last hosted the Frozen Four in 2003, the MAAC has bid to bring the event back to the First Niagara Center in one of the years between 2015 and 2018.

"I think the one thing we have going for us more than anything is our long and successful history of hosting championship events and selling championship events out," Maher said. "Whether it's the NCAA Basketball Championships or the Frozen Four we had previously, those resonate with the committees and with the NCAA."

Fans of college championships don't have to wait for these bids to go through to buy tickets for an event. First Niagara Center will host parts of the second and third rounds of the NCAA Basketball Tournament on March 20th and 22nd of 2014.
