Bills Barnyard

I had the unique opportunity of flying over the stadium Sunday in the Erie County Sheriff's helicopter and witnessing the spectacle that is modern-day tailgating.  And I have to say, the 'ugly' definitely outweighs the beauty that is supposed to be an NFL gameday.

After my flight I made my way through the maze of garbage strewn about the parking lots and meandering fans who were in no state to make it through a game, let alone make it into the stadium!  And as I stood in line to get into the stadium, it sealed the deal when a mass of fans started chanting sexual vulgarities about Tom Brady as my son and several other young fans watched in dismay.

Somehow a good percentage of NFL(Bills) fans have lost their way and turned the Sunday experience into an open parking lot frat party.  It used to be enough to take the grill and a few beers for a good old fashioned tailgate.  But now it seems you need a keg or more to throw a modern-day tailgate.

The Bills, to their credit, are trying to reel in the parking lot madness. But it seems like an insurmountable task as more and more fans use Bills home gamedays as a way to enter a parking lot culture where nothing seems out of bounds.  The good news is that once you're inside the stadium, the Bills have a much better handle on things and the in-game experience is more than tolerable.

I can tell you first-hand, the Erie County Sheriff's Department is watching closely, on the ground and in the air.  And what they witness and have to tackle before and after these games is embarrassing.

If only there was a magic way to get into the stadium without passing through the parking lots turned frat house, most fans would be better off.
