As they continue their annual ranking of area schools, Business First has found that the once volatile elementary school ratings have settled on a fairly consistent winner.
For the third year in a row , Amherst's Smallwood Elementary is number one.
Smallwood has the second best scores on the state's English Language Arts tests according to the paper's analysis of First analysis of 2005-2008 data, and the school also boasts the region's second highest math rating in the 8 counties of WNY.
Business First took NY State Education Dept. test scores for all 292 elementary schools across Western New York, and used 4 years of data on fourth grade performance to develop the rankings.
