Brown Not Disappointed with Occupy Protesters

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Mayor Byron Brown told reporters he was not disappointed with the Occupy Buffalo protesters, but warns such an encampment will not happen again on city property.

Brown says there were three days of negotiations before the eviction took place early Thursday morning. "It was made clear to Occupy Buffalo if the agreement was not extended in writing, then after the expiration of the agreement, the city would enforce all applicable laws," says Brown. He believes the offer of an extension of the permit to March 8th was rejected because the occupiers wanted to continue this into April or May. "As we go into the spring and summer, there are more events in Niagara Square and downtown Buffalo. We need to get the square into condition for the public. While we wanted to respect their rights, we need to also respect the right of the public at large," noted Brown.

Brown says the occupiers were professional and cooperative during the four months in Niagara Square. "There have been no injuries to anyone, there have been no arrests, this has been heralded as an example in how to work with this movement nationwide," says Brown.

Brown says don't expect another repeat. "There is not going to be any approval of encampments of this nature in the city going forward that violate any city ordinance and law," warned Brown. "Of course, Occupy Buffalo has the public protest rights any citizen has and those public protest rights will be respected," added Brown.

Brown says costs are expected to be minimal, with Occupy Buffalo offering to help pay for those costs.

Why was this allowed in the first place?
If this encampment was in violation of city ordinances to begin with, why was this not dealt with immediately? I suspect if a multitude of other organizations tried to exploit our laws in this manner it would have been dealt with differently; so why was this violation allowed to continue? Peaceful or not -- a violation of law should be treated as such for every group, peaceful or not. Laws exist for a reason, and a violation is just that, a violation.
