Buffalo 4th Highest Poverty Rate in US: Business First
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Some number crunching by Business First finds the Queen City is in the top five in a category it should not be talking proud about: high poverty rates.
Based on Census Bureau statistics, Business First finds Buffalo has the nation's fourth highest poverty rates. Of 58.000 families, 26 percent of them are living in poverty.
"That's a statistic that's a reality in Western New York," says Mike Billoni of the Food Bank of Western New York. "We have seen an increase of 15 percent since the federal government enacted cuts in food stamp benefits last November, and we're on pace to set a record with distributing more than 15.5 million pounds of food."
Billoni says one solution is to create jobs, something he says Governor Cuomo has been working on. "We have some great people who want to work, and people who come to our agencies who are out of work are looking for work," says Billoni. He adds people are one tragic step away from needing assistance, and the need does not discriminate.
This comes as Tops donated 43,000 pounds of pasta to the Food Bank.
