Buffalo PD Officer Kills Suspect In Struggle

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) -- The Buffalo Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a man by one of their officers Sunday morning.

During the investigation into the short-term theft of a patrol car, a Buffalo police officer stopped a man on Tonawanda Street, to question him.

The suspect is said to have shoved the officer, and tried to flee. Once the officer caught the man, there was a struggle and the officer fired one shot from his service weapon.

Although dazed from the attack, the officer was able to radio for help, and responding patrols found both the suspect and the officer.

The suspect -- described only a man believed to be in his 20's -- was transported to Erie County Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The officer was treated and released.

Buffalo Police have not yet released the names of either person.

The department issued a statement, saying in part, "This matter remains under active investigation by the Buffalo Police Department's Homicide Squad, with a parallel investigation being conducted by the Internal Affairs Division."
