Police commissioner Daniel Derenda speaking at the Aug. 7 announcement providing details about the program.

Buffalo's Gun BuyBack program continues through 5 p.m.

Buffalo (WBEN) -- The city of Buffalo's Gun Buyback program continues 5 p.m. at several churches in the area.

As of mid-afternoon, the city says people have turned in about 550 guns at the churches involved.

Officials announced the program Aug. 7, and Mayor Byron Brown says the money for the buyback comes from asset forfeiture.

"Seized cash from illegal drug sales in the community," Brown said during the announcement outside Jordan River Missionary Baptist Church at 440 Leroy Ave., one of the locations for the program on Saturday.

The program provides pre-paid cash cards in various amounts -- depending on the type of gun turned in.

SOUTH BUFFALO:  St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 450 Abbott Rd.
