Byron Brown Defeats Bernie Tolbert in Democratic Mayoral Primary

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN/AP) -- Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown has won the Democratic primary over political novice Bernie Tolbert as Brown seeks a third term.

"I think the voters spoke loud and clear tonight, that they favored our message of progress and moving this city forward... and they rejected the message of my opponent" Brown said after his victory speech.
Brown, first elected to the office in 2005, campaigned on progress the long-suffering city has made during his tenure, from new development along the waterfront to a higher credit rating. Going into Tuesday's primary, he had broad political support from local party officials in a city dominated by Democrats.
Tolbert, a former head of the FBI's Buffalo field office, acknowledged he was in an uphill fight against Brown but argued he would do a better job addressing crime and educational issues.

"Clearly we did not have the money, and Byron had a pretty hefty war chest and was able to buy television ads" Tolbert said. "None of that should stop anyone from pursuing what they think is a good cause."
The Republican candidate is Sergio Rodriguez. Brown said after his win that he would not debate Rodriguez prior to the general election.
The general election is Nov. 5.
