Car, Bear Collide in Springville

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) A scary moment for a driver in Springville earlier this week. The driver had way too close of an encounter with a bear.

Erie County Sheriff's Sgt. Daniel Dytchkowskyj says it happened Wednesday around 9:30 am on Cascade Drive. "Fortunately, the driver was not going very fast, so the vehicle was able to drive away. Unfortunately, it killed the bear," says Dytchkowskyj.

Dytchkowskyj says bears are moving into suburban areas, and it's not surprising to get a call of a car striking a bear. "You may recall a bear was struck on the 190 a few years back in the city of Buffalo," notes Dytchkowskyj.

He cautions you to drive the speed limit, especially when an animal could jump onto the road. "You should be able to have enough time to stop, if possible. You should always look side to side especially in the morning and evening for deer, bears can be seen all hours," advises Dytchkowskyj.

If you are in an accident, here are the Erie County Sheriff Traffic Bureau Guidelines:
  1. Check yourself and your passengers for any injuries.
  2. Call 911
  3. Stay in the vehicle unless there is a fire.
  4. Do not approach the animal for any reason.
  5. Wait for law enforcement to arrive to check the condition of the animal.
