The National Kidney Foundation Serving Western New York presents “Live Kidney-Friendly”
@ D’Youville College, Koessler Administration Building, 320 Porter Avenue, Buffalo, N.Y
This program is designed not only for chronic kidney disease patients and transplant recipients, but also for those at risk for chronic kidney disease; specifically people with diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of these conditions, or a family history of kidney disease.

Fill Ralph Wilson Stadium twice and HSBC Arena once. That represents the over 170,000 Western New Yorkers who have chronic kidney disease. Over 1,600 Western New Yorkers are on dialysis and over 500 are on the kidney transplant waiting list.

Diet is the key to managing chronic kidney disease. In fact, proper nutrition may slow or stop the progression of kidney disease. It is also important for patients to partner with their doctor and to be there best healthcare advocate. Maintaining a positive attitude and having fun have a major impact on quality of life for anyone with a chronic illness. These three elements will come together in this program: “Live Kidney-Friendly.”
Attendees will participate in three sessions:

Kidney-Friendly Cooking
Live Cooking Demonstration
Chef Neal Plazio, The Chef’s Table
Students, D’Youville College, School of Dietetics
Attendees will be able to watch a live cooking demonstration and sample a kidney-      friendly meal including chicken nuggets with honey mustard dipping sauce, pasta primavera, raw veggies and dip, and a pretty plum flower tart.

Patient Empowerment
Patti Merritt, LCSW-R
Sara Montz, LMSW-R
This session, led by two social workers, will help participants to become their best healthcare advocate and will present tips on how to effectively partner with their doctor to manage their health.

CKD Jeopardy
Sharon Zalemski, MS, RD, CSR, CDN
Participants will use what they learned to have some fun playing CKD Jeopardy.

The NKF is a major health organization seeking to prevent kidney and urologic diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of organs for transplantation.

Cost for the program is $5, which includes parking and refreshments. Call the National Kidney Foundation at (716) 835-1323 or visit www.nkfofwny.org. to register or for more information.

Benefit for  Adriana Marie Urbino
@ Lakeview firehall @ 6427 Lakeview Road, Lakeview NY, 14085
On February 19, 2009 Adriana Marie Urbino was born. , Adriana was a very healthy, happy, and alert baby. Sam and Tanya lived for their precious baby girl. Adriana got sick in late May. They stayed at the Ronal McDonald house on May 26th, and asked the doctors if anything happened to let them know right away. Adriana had 2 stokes in the middle of the night. On May 27th, 2009 the whole family was at the hospital with them for support, while 97 day old Adriana was on life support. The doctor called for a family meeting after an EEG test to tell us all the news. He explained to us that the baby was brain dead and gave my brother and his wife an ultimatum to keep their daughter as is, or a grievous decision to "pull the plug." Around 1 am on May 28, 2009 Adriana's poor body was too weak to go on, and she passed. A benefit  is planned to raise money for Adriana's headstone and the overwhelming funeral expenses. The benefit will be November 14, 2009 At the lakeview firehall @ 6427 lakeview road, lakeview NY, 14085. We are having a chinese auction and 50/50 raffles. For more information please call 716-982-5948.
