Cuomo: Deal Reached to Repower Western NY Plant

DUNKIRK, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced a $150 million agreement to convert a coal-fired power plant in western New York into a natural gas facility.

Cuomo made the announcement Sunday in  Dunkirk. Cuomo says under the agreement, NRG Energy and National Grid will repower the Dunkirk plant's three coal units with cleaner-burning natural gas.

The governor says the conversion will also help relieve transmission bottlenecks in the region, reduce electricity supply costs for consumers and boost output from 75 megawatts to 435 megawatts.

The conversion is expected to be completed by the fall of 2015.

A group of independent power producers that operate 13 natural gas plants across upstate New York opposed converting the Dunkirk plants from coal to natural gas.
