Deputies say the scam involves cold phone calls being placed to local residents from out-of-area phone numbers. The caller, posing as a family member to the victim, states he is in some type of trouble with the law, usually that he is under arrest or owing court fees. He instructs the victim to proceed to Walmart, CVS or Walgreens, etc., to purchase thousands of dollars in Green Dot or Moneygram prepaid cards. The caller then requests the serial numbers on those cards to pay for his bail or attorney’s fees in order to get him out of trouble.
Two very recent cases have occurred in the Town of Boston and Elma, where one couple was scammed out of thousands of dollars.
