Grand Island, NY (WBEN) - An Erie County Sheriff's deputy was struck by an impaired driver Wednesday morning.
Around 9:15AM, Deputy Matthew Fuqua walked behind Teresa Gilewicz’s vehicle to talk to another Deputy. The other Deputy was behind Gilewicz's vehicle in a marked sheriff's car.
At that time, Gilewicz put her vehicle in reverse pinning Deputy Fuqua between the two vehicles. The car struck the Deputy in the leg and subsequently pinned him against the bumpers.
Gliewicz drove to the Grand Island substation to report that she had been the victim of domestic violence.
"The results could have been catastrophic had she not put the car back in drive," said Undersheriff Mark Wipperman. "Right now in our investigation, we don't think this was a legitimate attempt to injure the deputy. We think the substance she was under had something to do with it."
The 22 year old Gilewicz was charged with driving while impaired by drugs. The incident remains under investigation and further charges are possible.
Deputy Fuqua was treated for minor injuries to his leg and later released from an area hospital.
