Figure Skating Draws Big Crowds at Olympic Time
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) TVs will be tuned to the Olympic games the next two weeks, and without doubt many viewers will look forward to figure skating.
"I think it's one of the most unique sports out there," says Jessica Roswell Lauria of Skate Great. "Figure skating is such an athletic sport. Yes, people want to see if they land on their feet or the pretty costumes, but I think they watch for the athleticism and grace."
The sport is very popular among women. "I'm not sure what the draw is, but they like the pretty dresses and how they look out there, and they love how graceful the skaters look," says Lauria.
The sport is very popular, but Lauria wishes the sport got more attention than just once every four years. "We are competitive all year with nationals and world. It's a popular sport year round, it's just not publicized as much," Lauria explains. "It would be nice if people who go to nationals or Empire State Games are publicized too because these skaters make great accomplishments."
