A two-vehicle crash on Strickler Road in Clarence has killed four people and injured two others.
According to the Erie County Sheriff's Office, a van with two people inside was broadsided by a sedan Sunday evening at approx. 8:30, near the intersection with County Rd, killing four teens inside the car.
The car apparently went through the stop sign on Strickler Road, somewhere over the 45 MPH speed limit according to the Sheriff's Office.
"Speed is definitely going to be a factor in this,' says Erie County Undersheriff Richard Donovan. "Right now it is the only contributing factor we are looking at. There is no evidence of alcohol, toxicology we won't have back for a while, but right now... it would definitely be speed."
Driver Viktor Shapiro, 18, of Amherst, and Amanda Slisz, 16 , of Amherst, were ejected from the vehicle. Passengers Mark Brown, 19, of Getzville and 16 year old Megan Schnorr of Amherst were also killed.
The passengers in van are identified as Mark and Bonnie Grimmer, both in their 60's and were taken to ECMC. Mark Grimmer was treated and released from ECMC Monday afternoon. Bonnie Grimmer remains in critical condition as of Monday evening at ECMC.
Both the van and the car slid through the intersection and ended up almost hitting a house on the corner of Strickler & County Roads (pictured at left).
Donovan, who spent part of his morning talking with the homeowners there, says that they have seen 4 similar stop sign accidents in the past 8 years at that intersection, but none have been fatal.
Friends of the teens began gathering near the crash site by late morning. Some bore flowers, while others crouched silently as if in prayer. One brought a Car & Driver magazine in tribute to Shapiro, who he said was a car buff.
Slisz was a junior at Williamsville East High School; Schnorr attended Williamsville South High School; Brown and Shapiro were former Williamsville North High students.
