Golombek Collects 3,500 Petition Signatures in Bid for State Assembly

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) -- Buffalo Common Council member Joe Golombek is one step closer to running for the State Assembly on the Democratic line this fall.
Golombek has collected over 3,500 petition signatures - more than six times the number he needed to earn a slot on the ballot. His campaign turned them in to the Erie County Board of Elections on Monday. Those signatures will have to be verified, but as long as Golombek has 500 valid signatures, he'll be clear to run as a Democratic candidate.
"I'm very satisfied with that number. I think it shows that there's broad support for change and reform in Albany, from the tip of Grand Island, through the West Side, Black Rock, Riverside, and North Buffalo," Golombek tells WBEN.
The councilman knows, however, that he still faces an uphill battle with the Erie County Democratic Committee.
"[Democratic Chairman Len] Lenihan doesn't like having anybody run against his hand-picked fellows," Golombek says. "I completely expect a challenge from them. That's why we got [so many signatures]."
Golombek intends to challenge the 144th Assembly District's Democratic incumbent, Sam Hoyt. He has already been endorsed by the Conservative Party, and the Independence Party is reviewing his bid for its support.
