Guilty Plea Tosses Markel off Cheektowaga Town Board
(WBEN) Charles Markel, a member of the Cheektowaga Town Board since 2008, has lost his seat, caught unlawfully collecting unemployment benefits.
Markel pleaded guilty this week to a misdemeanor charge of filing a false instrument, in relation to an application for more than $7,000s in unemployment benefits. He has repaid the money.
He was also sentenced to one-year conditional discharge, which means Markel won't go to jail- but Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita says the charge is such that by law, Markel forfeits his seat on the town board.
"His position as councilman is automatically vacated by operation of law," Sedita said in a prepared statement.
