Hit and Run Driver Sentenced to At Least A Year in Jail
|
Judge Timothy Franczyk sentenced Andrea Glinski to anywhere from 1-3 years in jail Friday, for a hit and run accident last March that left two UB students with serious injuries then and lingering disability now.
Franczyk rejected a maximum four year sentence, despite the pleas from several victim family members.
Glinski, 31, pleaded guilty to hit-and-run in the accident on Main Street Amherst, but only after she was arrested six days after the fact by Amherst police. A Tonwanda resident, she had taken her car for repairs in Blasdell, where the mechanic alerted police.
Tearful in court, Glinski apologized to the victims, saying she hadn't done so sooner because of pending civil lawsuits.
I re-live that day every day of my life," Glinski said,
Victims Amy Stewart and Rachel Baird were struck as they crossed Main Street, near Getzville Road. Stewart was in a coma for days, and continues therapy to this day. In court Friday, she stood by. leaning on a cane while her brother Michael read a statement on her behalf, urging Franczyk to impose a four year sentence, the maximum allowed by law,
Stewart's mother also pleaded with the judge, saying that she found Glinski's actions "repugnant", and that her cowardice was in direct contrast to victim Amy Stewart's strength.
Franczyk said that while Glinski is not a person of bad character, that her actions showed neither character, or compassion or courage. "The bottom line is... accountability," Franczyk said.
Glinski will be eligible for parole after serving her first year of the three year sentence.
