Ice Boom to be Removed Today, Weather Permitting

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Weather permitting, the New York Power Authority will try to remove three spans of the Niagara River Ice Boom today.

Paul Yu is the Chief of Water Management for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he says removing the boom can be a lengthy process. "What they do is they send a boat out there, and they literally unhook one end of the span from a buoy that's floating and tied to the bottom of Lake Erie," Yu said.

Ice cover on Lake Erie needs to be near 250-square miles before the boom can be removed. The Boom is put in place to prevent large amounts of heavy ice from traveling down the Niagara River.
