Buffalo, NY (WBEN) As Jim Kelly battles his recurrence of cancer, he's been getting calls and visits from friends all over the world. One of his friends spoke with WBEN.
Dennis DiPaolo says Kelly has been in pain. "The pain's been difficult, it's in a bad spot and painful location," says DiPaolo. He notes Kelly's no stranger to battling pain. "He's dealing with it and it seems like the poor guy's been in pain since his football days, but he's handling it very well."
But those who visit Kelly learn it's the patient who's keeping up their spirits. "He's in charge of the huddle, and tells them to keep their heads up. They come in somber, but he keeps their heads up with a positive attitude," says DiPaolo, who operates Ilio DiPaolo's Restaurant in Blasdell. DiPaolo's also been advised by Kelly to "bring that soup up" to his hospital room.
DiPaolo says Kelly and his family appreciate all the prayers their way. "He's getting calls from around the world from teammates and hall of famers trying to get in touch and Jim knows they're praying for him," says DiPaolo, who notes this is why Western New York is very special.
