Buffalo, NY (WBEN) There's still a lot of ice covered on Lake Erie, and now that could mean a cooler spring.
"We have a lot of ice cover on the eastern end," says National Weather Service Meteorologist Dave Thomas. "The ice on the lake does mean cooler temperatures especially if we get winds from the southwest." Thomas says temperatures could be as much as 20 degrees cooler than average.
Thomas says there is one good thing about Lake Erie ice cover. "As we get into late March early April, it's pretty rare to have accumulating lake effect snow," says Thomas.
The National Weather Service says this winter will rival the winter of 1976-77 as one of the coldest on record since moving to the airport weather station 70 years ago.
