CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (AP) - State police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was hit by a tractor-trailer on the Thruway in suburban Buffalo, shutting down the eastbound lanes and causing major traffic backups during the evening rush hour.
Investigators with the state police Thruway detail say 26-year-old Brenden Ballacchino of Orchard Park was hit by a truck around 4:10 p.m. in the middle of Interstate 90's eastbound lanes between exits 53 and 52 in the town of Cheektowaga, just east of Buffalo.
Troopers shut down the eastbound side and diverted traffic off the Thruway while they investigated the accident. This led to the closure of the 90 East between the 190 and William Street for several hours, during the Thursday afternoon rush hour.
That also led to backups on the 190, the 290, the Skyway, and several side streets, including Union and Harlem, as drivers tried to avoid the Thruway mess.
State Police are looking for witnesses to the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact SP Buffalo at 935-6970.
