Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- Terrence McGee was the CB burned for Terrell's Owens 40 yard touchdown on day one of OTA's. In day two it was McGee's turn on the same fly pattern. McGee leaped up and intercepted the underthrown Trent Edwards pass. McGee said, "Trent, after practice, he was kind of getting on me about how he got me yesterday, so I was happy to know that he was going to try it again. But I was just happy to get my hands on the ball and just make a play, so like I said it feels good to get the pick."
McGee and Leodis McKelvin both had nice knock down against Owens. Today was a day where Edwards threw a lot to other guys leaving Owens to run routes. Edwards started the practice off on his throws, but was hot for much of the time until the McGee pick.
New Monday Night Football announcer Jon Gruden thinks top to bottom, the Bills have the best receivers in the NFL. McGee faces them every day and said, " I think that every year, but like you said, we add Owens to the mix, we got Lee. We have the quickest guy I’ve ever seen, Roscoe, Josh, and even the young guys that came in and stepped it up. I think we have a great receiving corps."
Special teams again got things start with position coaches takng over from there. There was quite a bit 11-on-11 and some 7-on-7.
Things got a little testy when number one pick Aaaron Maybin totally undressed Chris Denman for what would've been a sack. Denman went after the kid, but Maybin said no.
TERRENCE MCGEE QUOTES:
On getting interception against WR Terrell Owens after giving up touchdown yesterday:
As far as yesterday, I didn’t feel bad about yesterday. I feel like I had a pretty good practice and even on that play I feel like I was in good position and it was just a good catch and good throw. But, I mean, it does feel good to get that interception whether it was on him or anybody, just to know you made a play in practice.
On whether or not Owens and he will make each other better in practice:
He’s accomplished so much, I don’t know if I’ll make him better, but he’s definitely going to make me better with him being a great receiver like he is. I’m definitely excited about each practice. I come out here because I know going up against the type of guys we’ve got and with him added, it’s going to make me a better player.
On the challenge of covering Owens:
It’s a big challenge. He’s a big guy with speed and he’s going to compete. Every time he gets out there it just makes you a better player because you have to compete. You want to make a play against him.
On Jon Gruden’s comment that the Bills may have the best receivers in the NFL:
I think that every year, but like you said, we add Owens to the mix, we got Lee (Evans). We have the quickest guy I’ve ever seen, Roscoe (Parrish), Josh (Reed), and even the young guys that came in and stepped it up. I think we have a great receiving corps.
On his interception in practice:
Trent (Edwards), after practice, he was kind of getting on me about how he got me yesterday, so I was happy to know that he was going to try it again. But I was just happy to get my hands on the ball and just make a play, so like I said it feels good to get the pick.
On returning kicks and its effect on his body:
It’s a long season. Our bodies feel about the same at the end of the season. Each game, your body is taking a pounding. By the time you get to game 16, it just feels like you’ve been in a car wreck. But I wish I could go back there and do one or two. Hopefully (Leodis McKelvin) will sprain his pinkie toe or something so I can get out there and get one for him. But he’s done a tremendous job. I had my time doing it and it was great while it lasted, but it’s time for somebody else to do it.
On Leodis McKelvin’s development:
He started hot when he came in. I think his first start was that Kansas City game. You just see the type of player he was then and why the Bills drafted him. Especially his return game, it just added a one-two punch, so with that experience of getting to play half the season now a full, 16-game season, look for more things out of him.
LEE EVANS QUOTES:
On the signing of Terrell Owens:
I was surprised by it, certainly surprised, but in a good way because I think that when you look at us offensively, it gives us a lot of weapons. A lot of guys have the opportunity to get balls and the potential to be very good offensively is there. That was my initial reaction when it first happened. I was really excited about it and now it’s just a matter of putting it on the field and making it work.
On if he can see the potential of the offense:
Absolutely. With some of the things that we were doing, we’re letting Trent (Edwards) have a little more freedom in the offense to, if he sees something that he likes, getting the guy in a position to make a play. He’ll have that type of freedom, which is good for us but puts the onus on us to be on the same page with him as well. I think that the thing that we’re doing out here is good work, is good practice for us and I think it will pay off as we continue through these and going to training camp.
On if there is a learning curve with the offense every year:
It is a little bit. It is a little different every year. We’re doing some different things and obviously we have different personnel, guys coming in and out, it’s a little different, it’s a little more to learn. There is a comfort level there with obviously the quarterback position being like it is. I think it just helps you start at a much higher platform.
On the hoopla surrounding Owens:
I think it’s great for him. T.O. comes with a lot of press, and he does a lot of good things in the media and in the community, so it’s well-deserved. He’s been a player around this league for a long time. He’s certainly one of the best players in the league now, and all that, it just comes with him. The biggest thing now is just us being able to communicate out on the field and through two days, we’ve been able to do that pretty well.
On giving defenses difficult decisions to make:
I think that’s what’s really exciting about it. It’s exciting for us as we go into the season, because we know what can be, when you look at it on paper, you certainly have the potential to be very good offensively, so that creates that excitement moving into the season.
On if he expects to see different coverages from opposing defenses:
Yeah, definitely. Because you have viable threats on both sides, it may be that they try to take both of us away and leave the middle open. Whatever it may be, you look at it on paper and you can theorize and do all of this stuff, but it’s about playing. We’ll certainly have more opportunities than we had in the past and it’s just about making it work.
On if he’s curious about which cornerbacks will be covering him:
Well, it’ll be interesting to see just how defenses approach us as a whole, offensively, so that’s what we still are waiting to see, what happens with that. Adjustments will certainly have to be made, but you know when you look at it know, you get the chance to switch your formations and dictate some things to the defense and see how they react.
On who the team’s number one receiver is:
I don’t really think that’s the right question. I think you have two very explosive players and you do what you can to get both players involved. Talking about who is number one, who’s what, when the defense gives you a look, you take advantage of it to that side, and certainly for some games, it may go back and forth, but I think the biggest thing is just for us both to work together and win football games and get to the playoffs.
On how the shifting offensive line affects the offense:
I think that’s where it starts, up front, but we have guys switching positions, but not necessarily new guys there, so I think there is some familiarity on the offensive line. But with those guys coming in, the guys who are coming in are bringing a different attitude that some of the other guys had when they were here, so I’m just looking forward. And with the coaches we have and the way it’s been progressing to this point, we’re very optimistic about it, we’re excited about the new guys that came. We know what the guys here, what they’ve done, so I think they did a good job of communicating and Trent does a good job of communicating with them, and getting everybody on the same page. When you have that, then you have a chance.
On if he expects to be double-covered less this year:
I think it will certainly drop. I was double-covered a lot last year. I think that it will drop. It’s hard to say by how much. I think teams will just try to schematically do different things that take people away at certain times, but it will be on the quarterback to make the right read on what the defense is trying to do, and see who’s open and make the play. We’ll see. I think it will be certainly a lot of fun going into it, and as we go through the season, it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be a lot of work, but the potential is there.
On the biggest changes on the offense:
It’s letting Trent, out there on the field, be able to make checks and tell guys what to do in certain situations. It has to be something that everybody knows and sees, especially us on the outside. We see a coverage that we want to attack, I see it, he sees it, Terrell sees it, we know what’s coming and we know what he’s looking to call. That’s just going to come down to film study throughout the season. That’s one of the biggest changes and it’s not easy to do. You really have to be on the same page with it. That’s one of the biggest differences in last year and this year, so we just have to make it work.
DOMINIC RHODES QUOTES:
On being here for the rest of OTAs:
I’m going to be here learning the playbook and getting ready for opening day and preseason, so I can be the most prepared I can to make some plays.
On his camaraderie with RB Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch:
Me and Freddy have already been playing basketball together and just hanging out in the locker room, lifting and we’ve been out here for awhile. This is the first day I’ve met Marshawn (Lynch) and he’s a cool cat. He knows me from when I played out in Oakland and just from being in the league and I’ve watched him as well. We’ve got the same kind of mindset out on the field. We’re both real excited guys. I think we’re going to be alright.
On his initial thoughts seeing Lynch and WR Terrell Owens:
I know for a fact that Terrell (Owens) is a great player and he’s going to bring a different face to the offense along with Lee (Evans) and all the rest of the receivers, Josh (Reed) and Roscoe (Parrish). They’re all great receivers, they can all stretch the field and I think that we’ve got a great chance right now by putting in a new offense, getting a new strategy going and I think when the season starts, you’ll see a new Bills team on the field with a bunch of playmakers.
On the competition among the running backs:
I think that all of us want to do well and we’ve all had success in this league, so with success you want it more. I know that Marshawn wants to go back to the Pro Bowl, I want to go to the Pro Bowl, and I know Fred (Jackson) wants to go to the Pro Bowl. With that being said I know that we’re all going to compete to get out there and make as many plays as we can.
On pushing each other already:
Whenever a guy is in there and he’s getting the same play that the other guy got, I guess he wants to make his play look better than the other guy made. And I know that from their mindsets and watching them play, I know that they’re competitors and that they’re going to do everything they can to be on the field making plays.
