The Medina paratrooper who died last weekend in a training exercise in North Carolina will be welcomed home for the final time.
Local Orleans County veterans agencies are working to make sure U.S. Sgt. Shaina Schmigel is honored by the entire community. A procession Monday will escort her body from the Buffalo-Niagara airport to a Batavia funeral home. Residents can pay their respects when Sgt. Schmigel's procession is expected to pass through Medina's Main Street at 6:30 p.m.
Sgt. Schmigel earned a plethora of military awards and honors including the Army Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with one Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.
Sgt. Schmigel, a 2010 Medina High School graduate who enrolled after graduation, was 21 years old and served as a military intelligence analyst in Iraq. She died during a parachute exercise May 30 in Fort Bragg.
Sgt. Schmigel will be buried with full military honors Wednesday in Corfu.
