NYC Expands Smoking Ban to Include E-Cigarettes

NEW YORK (AP) - New York City lawmakers have voted to expand the city's indoor smoking ban to include electronic cigarettes.

The City Council approved the ban Thursday by a vote of 43 to 8 amid sharp disagreement within public health circles about how to treat the devices.

E-cigarettes heat a nicotine solution and emit a puff of vapor that manufacturers say is harmless.

Most scientists agree that e-cigarettes are substantially less dangerous than tobacco.

But they are still highly addictive, and some anti-smoking activists say it isn't clear whether they are truly safe.

Others say they should be embraced as a way to help smokers quit.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said allowing the devices in public places would send the wrong message to kids.
