Naked!

Penn State.

 Syracuse.

Apparently I am not the only middle-aged male in WNY whose thoughts have  wandered back to the more carefree if hormonally-charged teenage years recently.

The spark for reflection: the college sex scandals.

Allegedly (of course), two coach-gym teacher types derived and acted upon sexual cravings with underage boys to whom they’d been entrusted.

I don’t think I will ever hear “rhythmic slapping sounds” again without a feeling of nausea or dismay.
In 2011, the idea of adults being involved with naked children, barring a very good explanation, is repugnant to us in every way.

Which brings me back to my teenage years and the tradition in some schools of NAKED swimming for students, usually boys.

My children were horrified and yet laughing in disbelief when I told them of our compulsory skinny-dipping mandate from 7th through 12th grade.

In fact, unless you were there it sounds absolutely medieval and barbaric. And we are only talking about thirty years ago!
 Here’s how it worked:

1.      Go to gym class and totally disrobe.
2.      Wrap towel around waist.
3.      Hang towel on hook in shower.
4.      Walk buck-naked into natatorium.
5.      Be naked before the fully-clothed gym instructors.

Even at the age of twelve I thought there was something, well, homoerotic about this. I just knew that it wasn’t right.
And walking into a bitterly cold room after a walk to school in 0 degrees could be, ummm, humbling.

But at twelve you don’t make waves. Naked? That’s how we’ve done it in the district since Moses wore short pants, and that’s how it is going to stay!

Young people today may believe this to be a tall tale, but on my soul I swear that naked swimming actually happened.
 Just thirty years ago!

What still bothers me (and I am not alleging abuse) is the complete lack of any kind of logic or sense to this Grecian exercise, especially as the girls wore suits when they swam.

I’ve heard over the years that naked swimming was to break down the individual for future military service (apparently some districts subversively resisted and allowed their young men to wear suits); that any suits would molder wet in lockers (girls apparently had magic suits that were washed and dried by fairies); that chlorine killed, errr, lice (apparently boys’ bathing suits were water-proof); that being bare-butted was a form of riot-control (!) and so on and so forth.

There has not been one convincing explanation to me as to why boys had to be naked for extended periods in front of grown men.

In the absence of any logical explanation, the recent scandals have convinced me more than ever that the real reason boys had to swim naked was that someone must have enjoyed it and gotten a sick thrill from it.

This is a classic case of applying William of Occam’s rule, which essentially is that the best explanation is usually the one that makes the most sense.

Can you imagine a school opening a new pool in 2011 and a gym teacher saying, “Hey, we’ll make the boys swim in the nude!”

I would hope that he (or she) would be fired on the spot.

As the recent scandals have shown us, when it comes to your children, you cannot be too careful.

As far as I can tell, I suffered no permanent scars from this, but I know of several boys (now men) who have never gotten over the humiliation of forced naked swimming in the public schools and who still resent themselves for not having complained….thirty years ago.

I remember it vividly. It was 1958. I can still visualize the instructor. Occam's Razor should have elicited the"duh" response. At our age a pedophile sounded like someone who walked in a single file. Who knew?

Thanks Tom. I didnt sleep last night as I replayed your swimmming story in my mind. I am still infuriated at such blatent inndecency.. I grew up on long island with three brothers & nypd dad. NEVER would dad have allowd such abuse. My husband grew up in chicago & la & was appalled. This was in the same time frame. Could be you parents were idiots, backwards or afraid. You poor buffalo area people.

Only WNY
I went to an all male college outside of WNY and we had classes to obtain a lifeguard certificates. I told a classmate of mine one day when he forgot his suit for class to just go naked. As you can imagine an all male school is very sensitive to homoerotic issues (even back in the 80's) and my classmates were, let's say taken aback when I suggested this. I explained my high school experience and not a single one had anything even remotely similar. If there is a petofilia gym teachers club out there it looks like the WNY chapter kept this special treat to themselves.

Me too
Grades 6-12 in the Williamsville school district. Also, in 4th grade on outdoor ed trip, art teacher had us all run naked in front of him for mandatory shower.

No good reasosn for naked swimming at school
absolutely disgusting that young boys would be forced to disrobe at school in front of full clothed grown men. I wouldn't be surprised that not all intentions were good and at times by certain swim teachers these same boys were molested. In light of the current college scandals and catholic church scandals we as the public should smarten up and use our common sense. The reasons given for naked swimming in school simply made no sense! The only reason I can fathom for this perverted practice is it served as an opportunity for some pediphiles to get their jollies off. It is alarming to me to realize how tightly shut our eyes have been toward to these very obviously strange practices.

Naked!
Tom - I graduated from high school 55 years ago and remember all four years of naked swimming too! While I don't think I suffered any from this, I still cannot understand the necessity for doing so -- and the uneasiness I felt being exposed among my peers and in front of the instructor.

swimming naked
from 3rd grade,1957 until graduation,1967, the boys in our school swam naked. the girls wore these horrible tank suits and we had to line up one by one with our suit and towel.

Neked late 70's early 80's
Not only did we have to swim naked, but the instructor had us all line up against the wall, in some sort of review for half the class while only two or three swam a couple of laps against each other. The instructor sat at a closed front desk. you do the math!

Red Fanny Too
Where were the parents? Not only were we shamed to swim naked at Williwmsville schools but the swim coach terrified students with the threat of smacking our rear end with his clip board. It seems outrageous today. In truth we all continued to laugh about it years later. Defenseless, naked boys would sit together on bleachers nervously watching a gym coach take satisfaction inflicting pain on another boy. We concluded it was part of the territory, because we were nacked, and the practice was enforced. We never understood why and thought it strange that the practice only applied to boys. The "preparation for military" angle makes some sense.

Naked Indian
WSW in the 70's... then if a kid screwed up, ran on the deck or something like that, he was singled out and given a swift whack on bare wet bottom with a kickboard

5 Finger Club
I lived through that, did not bother me. One of our gym teachers warned us that miss behavior would result in joining the 5 finger club. Leaning over the pool, a swat on the back side would knock you in, leaving the mark of 5 fingers. Great, 30 year no issues, now I cannot sleep
