ALBANY, N.Y. (WBEN/AP) -- Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Anthony Billittier says there are nine new confirmed cases, six of them children.
Billittier says three students at Transit Middle School, one from Nichols, one from William Street School, and one from Amherst Middle School have tested positive for swine flu. Billittier says three adults in Amherst have also tested positive. Billittier says most displayed flu-like symptoms, but one person did require hospitalization
"This really isn't a surprise to any of us," says Billttier. "We knew we would continue to get more cases, especially given the CDC's projection of 20 to 40 percent of the population will be infected in a pandemic." Billittier says he will be closely monitoring school absenteeism, 24 hour census of emergency departments, urgent care centers, and unusual events in day care centers. He says there have been no abnormal rates at the moment.
Health Commissioner Richard Daines says Wednesday the new cases include nine in New York City, where the number stands at 201. The total outside the city rose to 98, with 13 cases in Nassau County, two in Rockland, and single cases in Westchester and Monroe counties.
Many cases of H1N1 virus infection have been mild, with symptoms resembling seasonal flu _ fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and chills. But a New York City public school administrator died Sunday of the infection.
Niagara County Health Department is holding a presentation about Swine Flu at the North Tonawanda City Hall, Wednesday Night at 7pm.
