Orleans County Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Trooper
Albion, NY (WBEN) State Police have charged a Kendall man with attempted murder of a state trooper after investigators say he tried to run down a trooper.
State Police say Trooper Dan Metz was dispatched to a suspicious vehicle/erratic operator on ST-18 in the Town of Yates, Orleans County. State Police say Metz located the vehicle and attempted to effect a traffic stop.
Troopers say the vehicle driven by Carlos J. Botello, 42, of Kendall, NY, did not stop immediately and a brief pursuit ensued. The vehicle eventually pulled over and Metz cautiously approached the vehicle. Investigators say Botello looked back at Metz, put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated directly at him.
Metz was able to avoid being struck, troopers say Botello continued past him and struck the State Police vehicle. Trooper say Botello drove off, with Metz pursuing until Botello's car entered a farmer's field and became disabled.
Metz took Botello into custody without further incident and transported him to SP Albion. The Orleans County DA, Joseph Cardone, was consulted and recommended charging Attempted Murder 2nd.
Botello was arraigned in the Town of Yates Court and remanded to the Orleans County Jail on $250,000 bail.
