Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Buffalo School Board member Carl Paladino tells WBEN's Tom Bauerle he is taking action in State Supreme Court over the hiring of a public relations specialist for Buffalo Public Schools.
"I raised the issue at a subcommittee meeting last night, and I will bring it up again at the full school board meeting next Wednesday they have no right hiring this person without board approval," says Paladino, referring to Lorey Schultz, hired by the district to serve as public relations specialist at a salary of $115,000. Paladino wants to void all of the hires made by the board this year and will go to court to take action, with the exception of hires outside the board's jurisdiction.
"In matters where you change job titles or salary, you're changing board policy," explains Paladino. "We have to live the people. We have to live with what they do or don't do. We're held accountable and responsible, therefore we need to have a say, including the creation of another job."
Paladino says Schultz's hiring is not the only one he's concerned with. "It didn't make any sense when they demoted the last general counsel and hired a new one out of Rochester who answered our first three questions wrong," says Paladino.
Paladino also doesn't understand the need for a second PR person. "It's been my experience Elena Cala knows what she's doing. She has the experience and qualifications to be the PR person for the limited amount of PR," believes Paladino. "I believe they don't like me. They think they have to counter what I do with a PR person. They'll have releases on this and that all on the back on taxpayers. They don't like dissent, they don't like anyone standing up to them and saying they're wrong."
