Peaceful End to Clarence Situation
Clarence, NY (WBEN) It took several hours during the late afternoon and evening but Erie County Sheriff's deputies say there is a peaceful ending to a search for a man with a gun.
Chief of Services Scott Joslyn says the initial call came in around 3:30 at a home on Heise Road. "When we arrived, there was 26 year old male who was a resident of the household, who left the home and went into a large parcel of property he owns," says Joslyn. Joslyn says the man never made a threat to anyone, and deputies were concerned for his safety.
Residents along Heise were evacuated as a precaution, and Eastern Hills Mall was in lockdown for about half an hour. "There was at least one shot fired," says Joslyn, who adds discharging a firearm north of Greiner is legal provided all other regulations are followed.
Joslyn says deputies told the man he had done nothing wrong and just wanted to check on his well being. Around 8:15, the man came out and talked with deputies and is now "in control" of the sheriff's office. Joslyn says it's too early to determine if charges will be filed. Joslyn says the man was cooperative with deputies and never threatened law enforcement.
