Buffalo Police Shoot, Kill Riverside Woman

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) -- A Riverside woman was shot and killed by Buffalo Police, when she refused orders to drop two knives -- knives she may have used to stab to death her own grandson.

Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards says two officers on patrol about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday were alerted to commotion on the porch at 195 Esser Avenue and saw that a 4-year-old boy was bleeding.

As the officers went to help, Richards says a woman charged them, armed with two large knives. One of the officers shot her and she died at the scene. Multiple reports identify her as 38-year-old Charlene Fears, a resident at that address.

The boy was rushed to Women and Children's Hospital in what Richards described as very serious condition. Around 9 p.m., it was learned the child had succumbed to his wounds.

Professional Standards is investigating, as is the case in all officer related shootings.
