And at the same time, one prominent local official understands why the towns made the change, but also has another idea.
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz says the idea behind changing a town board to only three members is saving tax dollars, but he believes it doesn't really lead to much savings.
"It slows down processes. It doesn't really speed things up. What we should be talking about is sharing of services," Poloncarz says.
Poloncarz offered this example.
"Towns sharing assessors. Instead of having two assessors at $80,000 a year, they should share one assessor at $80,000 a year, and there are some towns doing that," Poloncarz added.
The elimination of a couple council members sounds good on paper, but he says it doesn't save much money. If anything, Poloncarz says, it may cost the town more because it slows down processes and makes it tougher for a town to do its business.
Voters in West Seneca and Alden will consider the board-member question in the November election.
