With a nod to Billy Joel, I recently had the pleasure of experiencing a pair of locally owned Italian restaurants: Citta di Militello and La Dolce Vita.
Opened in late 2008, Militello’s is owned by legendary musician Bobby Militello and Lisa Taravella. Located in a box-like building on Wehrle Dr. near Union, Militello’s has a wide selection of the type of Sicilian-style food my hubby’s family so ably prepares. Militello’s apt motto, “It’s not fancy, it’s family” is not just a tagline. Among the authentic-tasting dishes are Ma’s Braciole, hand-pounded flank steak rolled with a meatball mixture, capicola, hard-boiled eggs, Romano cheese, garlic and spices. Rolled and tied, the meaty package is simmered in sauce and served with pasta and homemade bread.
Most of the products at Militello’s have a hometown feel, Bobby explained. He buys his meats, vegetables and many other products from local vendors. They also keep dietary restrictions in mind, offering spelt, rice, wheat pasta and gluten-free dishes. Beer and wine are also available.
Militello’s won’t break the bank, thanks to many choices under five bucks and others costing less than $10. Bobby also proudly boasts how he threw out the fryer and microwave when he bought the restaurant. It shows! One last recommendation: try Lisa’s Cassata Cake, the most delicious version I’ve had of that delectable dessert.
When you head to Little Italy in North Buffalo, stop into La Dolce Vita (translating to “The Sweet Life”), where you’ll likely find affable owner Ross Runfola Jr. behind the counter. LDV is one of my favorite spots in the summer because of the terrific urban patio, al fresco dining and primo people-watching opportunities on a bustling Hertel Avenue. A charming bistro, this Italian eatery has a comfortable, intimate feel to it, including the gelato, coffee bar, and cookies in the front entrance and the cozy dining area off to the side.
Reasonably priced lunch and dinner items adorn the menu along with a varied wine list. I was delighted to see a lot of vegetarian choices too. The one dish I can’t resist? Sfogliatelle di Spinace, a trio of triangular phyllo dough pillows stuffed with spinach, roasted red peppers, gorgonzola and feta, baked to a golden brown.

Bravo!
I like to order this with a salad or an appetizer, wash it down with a dry red. It is light enough, yet satisfying, and it allows me to save room for some cuci dati and espresso.
We are so lucky to have wonderful choices when it comes to the food of The Boot. Mangia and enjoy!
