School Budgets: Is Your District Raising Taxes? Cutting Spending? Check the Numbers Here

(WBEN) Is your school district cutting spending?  Are they raising taxes, in Tuesday's budget vote?  This year, it turns out not as many are doing too much of either, compared to recent years.

Look up Your District HereErie County Spending | Erie County Taxes   | Niagara County Spending  | Niagara County Spending  | Allegany Co. Spending & Taxes | Cattaraugus County Spending & Taxes | Chautauqua Co. Spending & Taxes | Genesee Co. Spending & Taxes | Orleans Co. Spending & Taxes | Wyoming Co. Spending & Taxes

After last year when five WNY districts had budgets voted down at the polls- triggering protest rallies and lawn signs like the one at left--  this year, the school board races appear far more  contentious than any debate over spending and taxes.

This year, only three Erie County school districts cut spending out of the proposed budget compared to the previous year, but the average tax hike in Erie County is a relatively low 2.6 percent.

David Albert, NYS School Bds. Assoc.
predicts most budgets will pass in Tuesday voting
The average hike being proposed in Niagara County is  2.05 percent, according to numbers the districts provided to the state education department.

In Western New York, only Holland is asking to exceed its state tax cap, and is therefore required to pass the budget by more than a simple majority. In raw numbers, Sweet Home leads the Erie County pack of tax hikes, but after exclusions for various costs are factored in, the district does not have to reach the higher voter threshold.

Salamanca leads the tax cutting honor roll in Western New York, asking voters to approve a tax cut over 29 percent while still increasing spending almost 9 percent over last year's levels. (The district was able to tap into some specialized federal funds that offset the large amount of tax exempt Native American properties there, but Supt. Robert Breidenstein says his district, like others, worked hard on the usual issues like collective bargaining and stafffing levels.)
