UB's Operation Doorhanger Looks to Help Students, Neighbors
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) On neighborhoods surrounding the UB South Campus Wednesday afternoon, students moving in and longtime neighbors were greeted with bags containing information on staying safe and building harmony within the community.
The advice is valuable to off-campus students in two ways says Dr. Daniel Ryan, Director of Off-Campus Student Services. "Every fall we try to educate new students moving in and long time residents about safety concerns and how to protect themselves against crime. Also, to try to encourage students to become good neighbors and reach out to neighbors and build some community," says Ryan.
Ryan says students' rapport with neighbors can be invaluable. "Neighbors can look out for them. Students' schedules are predictable with classes and breaks, and by reaching out to neighbors and getting to know them, neighbors may keep an eye out on their property," notes Ryan.
