Clarence, NY (WBEN) -- 53 year old Karen Wielinski was watching television in her home on Long Street in Clarence Center. It was shortly after 10 PM on what would otherwise be a typical Thursday night.
“I heard a noise; planes do go over our house, but this just sounded very different.”
Little did Karen know that just moments later, her life would change forever.
“The next thing I knew, the ceiling was on me.”
Continental Airlines Flight 3407 had crashed into her home, trapping Wielinski, her husband and daughter inside.
Wielinski says she didn’t know how much was on top of her; she was panicking a little but was trying to stay cool. She says she pushed her way through and managed to escape from the rubble.
“I noticed some light to my right. The back of the house was gone. The fire had started. I could see the wings of the plane.”
Wielinski’s daughter Jill, 22, was watching television in an upstairs room at the front of their home.
“From what she’s saying, the attic came down (onto her). She couldn’t get through the windows because of the fire that was there, but she too, miraculously, saw an opening and slid out of (it). When I got her…I told her we had to get out of there. We had to get away from the fire.”
Her husband Doug wasn’t so lucky.
“To me, it looked like the plane went through the middle of the house. Unfortunately, that’s where Doug was.”
Wielinski says her husband had left the family room a few minutes before the crash, and presumed he was in the dining room when the crash occurred.
Both Karen and Jill were treated for injuries at Millard Filmore Suburban Hospital and released.
