Woman skips NYC, will run marathon distance in Delaware Park

Buffalo (WBEN) --  A Buffalo woman, who had been planning to run in the New York City marathon, will instead run the same distance in Delaware Park on Sunday morning.

And even though New York City officials decided late Friday afternoon to cancel the event, Julia Burke, 26, will still run her own marathon on Sunday, she says.

Burke was concerned about getting to Manhattan following the storm damage,  and is encouraging those who support her effort to donate to the Red Cross.

"When I found out there is so much interest in helping out, it's grown a little bit, and I'm encouraging anybody who wants to support me to go to www.redcross.org or www.nyc.gov and donate to one of the relief efforts there," Burke says.

Burke originally planned to donate the money she would've spent on her trip to the Red Cross.

Burke also says she didn't think she'd feel right about making the trip -- knowing how many people are still suffering on Staten Island, and the resources it'll take to stage the marathon.

On Sunday, she plans to do 15 laps around the park between 8-and-Noon, and Burke says anyone who wants to join her to do a lap is welcome to do so.

And those who want to come out cheer Burke and any other runners involved is also welcome, she says.
