BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo Police Department received 42 new recruits on Friday at Buffalo PS 95 Waterfront Elementary School.

The recruits were officially sworn-in by Buffalo Police's Interim Commissioner Byron Lockwood and will now head to a training academy.

"For the next six months it will be a pretty intense police academy," Mayor Byron Brown said. "Some of the recruits have previously gone through the academy as part of the BPD 21C program, which is designed to recruit the diverse police department of the 21st century, reflecting the demographics of our city. Those recruits will be able to hit the streets in a couple of weeks."

The police academy is managed through Erie Community College. All of the recruits will also receive 30 college credit hours.

There are over 850 individuals who were sworn in as part of the Buffalo Police Department.
