BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — Police on eastern Long Island say they foiled an attempted kidnapping of a 16-year-old boy by MS-13 gang members who allegedly had plans to kill the teen.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini (SEE'-nee) says three known gang members and two MS-13 associates have been arrested on conspiracy charges. He says four of the suspects are Brentwood High School students.

Sini said the five were looking to elevate their status in the gang by carrying out a murder.

There have been 25 suspected MS-13 killings on Long Island in the past two years.

Sini says undercover officers were in the Brentwood area after receiving complaints Tuesday that a group of Hispanic men in a van were harassing boys.

He says officers witnessed the attempted abduction on Wednesday afternoon and intervened.
