17 arrested for DWI on St. Patrick's Day Weekend

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Despite all the reminders from local authorities, at least 17 people were arrested for DWI around the time of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Buffalo on Sunday.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office reported nine arrests including three aggravated DWI charges. One of the nine people arrested was a minor. Meanwhile, eight individuals were arrested by New York State Police's Clarence troopers over the weekend.

Scott Zylka from the Erie County Sheriff's Office explained the added resources for the patrols came from the Erie County STOP-DWI program.

March 17: Paul Brenton, 71 of Clarence drove himself to the State Police Barracks in Clarence to report an incident.  While speaking with a Trooper the Trooper noticed that Brenton was intoxicated.  Brenton provided a breath sample of .08% and was arrested for Misdemeanor DWI and released to a sober party with a return court date in Clarence Court. 

March 17: Troopers participating in Operation GIVE (Gun involved violence elimination) City of Buffalo observed a vehicle make an illegal turn onto Goodyear St.  The driver William Sywak, 41 of Lackawanna appeared intoxicated and refused to participate in field sobriety tests or provide a breath sample.  Sywak was arrested and charged with DWI and released with a return court date in the City of Buffalo. 

March 17: Troopers participating in Operation GIVE (Gun involved violence elimination) City of Buffalo observed a car backing unsafely on Curtis St.  The vehicle was stopped and the driver Randall Neal, 61 of Buffalo, was unable to perform field sobriety tests due to his level of intoxication.  He was arrested and provided a breath sample of .28%.  Neal was charged with Aggravated DWI and released with a return court date in Buffalo. 

March 17: Trooper observed a vehicle traveling 80 mph in a 55 mph zone on State Route 33, Buffalo.  The vehicle was stopped and the driver Charles Morrow, 39 of Buffalo failed field sobriety tests.  Morrow was arrested and provided a breath sample of .11%.  Morrow was charged with DWI and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd (due to license suspensions).  Morrow was released with a return court date in Buffalo. 

March 19: Troopers participating in Operation GIVE (Gun involved violence elimination) City of Buffalo observed a vehicle move from its lane unsafely on Bailey Ave.  The vehicle was stopped and the driver Patrice Coleman, 36 of Buffalo failed field sobriety tests.  Additionally, there were three children unrestrained in the back seat (age 10, 6 and 2).  Coleman was arrested and provided a breath sample of .18%.  Coleman was charged with aggravated DWI with a child (Leandra's Law) a felony and endangering the welfare of a child.  Coleman was release with a return court date in Buffalo. 

March 19: Troopers observed a vehicle make an improper turn and move from its lane unsafely, Walden Ave, Lancaster.  The vehicle was stopped and the driver, Michael Prentice, 24 of Lancaster failed field sobriety tests.  Prentice was arrested and refused to provide a breath sample.  Prentice was charged with DWI and issued an appearance ticket for Lancaster Court. 

March 19: Trooper observed a vehicle traveling 80 mph in a 55 mph zone on State Route 33, Buffalo.  The vehicle was stopped and the driver, Jonathan Santiago, 31 of Buffalo failed field sobriety tests.  Santiago was arrested and provided a breath sample of .18%.  Santiago was charged with aggravated DWI and released with a return court date in Buffalo.

March 20: Troopers observed a vehicle traveling 70 mph in a 40 mph, Main St. Clarence.  The vehicle was stopped and the driver Zyed Abbadi, 26 of Williamsville failed field sobriety tests.  Abbadi was arrested and provided a breath sample of .13%.  Abbadi was released with a return court date in Clarence Court.

March 17, 3:03 A.M., Town of Clarence – Deputies Nati and Simmeth responded to reports of a vehicle off the roadway near 8285 Transit Road.  Their investigation determined the operator Jermaine Watkins, 27 of Buffalo, was intoxicated.  Watkins was charged with DWI, speeding, and moving unsafely from a lane.  

March 17, 11:36 P.M., Town of West Seneca – Sergeant Kaderli stopped a vehicle on Southwestern Boulevard and Reserve Road after observing vehicle and traffic violations.  A test indicated Eric Gralke, 41 of West Seneca, was more than twice the legal limit and is charged with Aggravated DWI and multiple traffic infractions.  The defendant was released to a sober third party.

March 18, 2:06 A.M., Town of Clarence – Thomas George, 26 of Holland, was stopped on Transit Road by Deputy Mulhern for vehicle and traffic violations.  After failing standard field sobriety tests and a breath test indicating a BAC more than twice the legal limit he was arrested and charged with Aggravated DWI and multiple vehicle and traffic infractions.  The defendant was released to a sober third party. 

March 18, 2:23 A.M., Town of Alden – John Miszuk, 27 of Akron, was arrested for DWI following an investigation into a property damage accident on Peters Corners Road by Deputy Biegasiewicz.  Miszuk is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.

March 19, 12:27 A.M., Town of Aurora – Brian Lawrence, 23 of Arcade, was stopped by Deputy Biegasiewicz on Olean Road.  The Deputy’s investigation resulted in Lawrence being arrested for DWI.  The defendant was released on tickets.

March 19, 4:13 A.M., Town of Cheektowaga – Deputy Zamorek arrested Stanley Blaszczyk, III, 29 of Sloan, for DWI following a traffic stop.  Blaszczyk was also issued a ticket for an improper turn and later released to a relative.

March 19, 4:28 P.M., Town of Elma – Deputy Biegasiewicz responded to the Clinton and Transit Road area for reports of a road rage incident.  The Deputy located the vehicle and began investigating the incident.  As a result of the investigation, a 17-year-old Elma resident was arrested for DWI.  The defendant was released to a relative.

March 19, 8:55 P.M., Town of Clarence – Deputy Biegasiewicz stopped a vehicle on Main Street for speeding.  The deputy administered a breath test to the operator and the results indicated a BAC of more than two and a half times the legal limit.  Brian Evertt, 24 of Alden, was arrested and charged with Aggravated DWI and vehicle and traffic violations. 

March 19, 11:07 P.M., Town of Elma – Deputy Szczepanski responded to complaints of an erratic driver on Route 400.  The Deputy located the vehicle on Bowen Road and attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the driver failed to stop for the emergency lights and sirens.  When the driver finally stopped the Deputy’s investigation resulted in the operator, Raymondo Gandolfo – 62 of Elma, being arrested for DWI.  The defendant’s BAC level was more than twice the legal limit.  Gandolfo was released to a sober third party.
