Ice Skating Outside... At New Era Field?

World Juniors Hockey event gives you the chance

Categories:

As part of the World Junior Hockey Championships coming to Buffalo, the Buffalo Sabres and Bills are offering a special opportunity for fans to skate outdoors at New Era Field for a price.

The tournament will include an outdoor game between the US and Canada at the stadium on December 29, and as long as there is a rink there the teams decided to allow fans a skate on the same rink during the two days before that game.

"We kind of looked at (the schedule) and saw some opportunity," says Harbor Center Communciations Manager Don Heins. " We've got to get the United States out there two days before the game to practice. We've got to get Canada out there the day before the game, and once the ice schedule came together we saw some opportunity."

The skate on December 27 and 28 costs $100 and includes a ticket to the game on Dec. 29th.  The tickets are available through Ticketmaster.com and  BuffaloWorldJuniors.com    COMPLETE DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE

The World Juniors Tournament showcases top amateur and recently drafted players from around the globe. The tournament begins the day after Christmas with games featuring teams from The United States, Belarus, Canada, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and  Switzerland over 12 days at the Key Bank Center and The Harbor Center downtown.

The last time there was an outdoor game at the then Rich Stadium was when the NHL held thier first outdoor Winter Classic game on a snowy New Years Day 2008, with  71,217 on hand to watch the Buffalo Sabres lose to the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 (Pictured above and at top of page) .  The outdoor rink from that event was moved to East Aurora and hosts regular public skates, but the average hockey fan has never been able to be on ice inside the stadium.
