NEW: Caputo Mentioned in Comey Hearing
AUDIO: Hear the exchange on Caputo inside
Washington, DC (WBEN) The name Michael Caputo was brought up during Monday's FBI hearing about Russia's role in interfering with the Presidential Campaign.
California Rep. Jackie Speier said, "Let's go back to this tarantula web..." likening Russian leader Vladmir Putin to a tarantula apparently referring to his ability to control others to do his bidding.
In the process, Michael Caputo's name was brought up. Speier asked about Caputo, Roger Stone, and Gazprom. "My question is, what possible reason is there for the Trump campaign to hire Putin's image consultant. Any thoughts?" she asked FBI Director James Comey and NSA Director Mike Rogers. Their replies, "No thoughts." Speier asked both about what Caputo is doing for Trump today. Comey said he had no idea, and Rogers declined to "talk about any US persons."
During the primary, Caputo worked on the Donald Trump campaign, and has also spent time in Russia.
Caputo responded via Twitter:
President Donald Trump is keeping tabs on the congressional hearing on Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. He's tweeting that the FBI and National Security Agency are telling Congress that Russia did not influence the electoral process.
That put FBI Director James Comey in the unusual situation of having to respond to presidential tweets in the middle of his testimony.
Trump's tweet seemed to differ with what Comey said. He told members of the House intelligence committee that the FBI has offered no opinion, and has no view and no information, on the potential impact on the election because that's not something the FBI looked at.
