Sabres Prepare for Busy Week in Hockey

The Action Begins With Wednesday Expansion Draft

(WBEN) - Who stays, who goes?

On Sunday, the Buffalo Sabres, along with the rest of the NHL, unveiled their list of players who will be protected from this week's Las Vegas expansion draft.

Among the players the Sabres chose to protect are Johan Larsson, Jake McCabe, Tyler Ennis, and Goalie Robin Lehner. Players like Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart are exempt from the draft because of their age. Las Vegas GM George McPhee will select one player from each of the 30 NHL teams this Wednesday.

Were there any surprises with the list?

"It was a minor surprise to have Tyler Ennis protected and Will Carrier out there, but you've got to figure that Jason Botteril and George McPhee of Vegas have a deal in mind," said WGR 550 Sabres Beat Reporter Paul Hamilton. "Maybe the conversation went something like this. McPhee said 'I tell you what, we won't take your goaltender if you leave Will Carrier for us.'"

In Hamilton's eyes, no matter what happens Wednesday, the Sabres don't need to worry too much.

"It's not going to be a big deal who the Sabres lose in the grand scheme of things," Hamilton said. "There's been a lot of hand-wringing over something that I think in the end isn't going to make all that much difference."

It's a busy week for the Sabres. In addition to Wednesday's expansion draft and this weekend's NHL Entry draft, the team will unveil their new Adidas jerseys tomorrow. The new uniforms are not expected to differ too much from the team's current look.
