Sources: Giambra Mulling Race For Governor
(WBEN) Sources close to former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra tell WBEN he is considering a run for governor and will definitely run if businessman Harry Wilson , the perceived GOP front runner doesn't get in.
Giambra was County executive from 2000 to 2007, a moderate Republican who was a Democratic City Councilman and City of Buffalo Comptroller before moving to the Rath Building. He was an advocate for regionalism, but ultimately got ensnared in a budget crisis in his final year in office when he proposed a bare-bones budget without any sales tax increase, resulting in layoffs and public outcry.
Wilson is a downstate businessman who ran against NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli in 2010 and has been visiting with Repulican State Chairmen talking about a run for months. Dutchess County Executive Mark Molinaro, Senate Majority Leaeder John Flanagan, and Assembly minority leader Brian Kolb have all said-- like Wilson- that they will announce a decision about running before the end of the year, possibly by Christmas.
