From a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by map our. As a result we have decided to terminate his employment. I'm Tim Wenger a long time today host Matt Lauer has been fired for inappropriate sexual behavior. This this is today. Live from Studio One day. Rockefeller plaza. And that's why everybody is well. Attitudes today and what it's your nickname at this morning because this is a bad morning hearing today and it can be seen. The announcement made by flowers co anchor Savannah Guthrie at the top of Wednesday's today show. Guthrie reading a statement from NBC news chairman Andy lack. Just moments ago if he is chairman India sent the following note to our organization. Dear colleagues on Monday night we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace I met our. It represented after serious review a clear violation of our company's standards as a result we have decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaints about his behavior in the over twenty years he's been an NBC news. We were also presented with a reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incidents. Our highest priority is to create a workplace environments where everyone feel safe and protected and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values. I met with consequences. No matter who the offender. We are deeply saddened by this turn of events but we will face it together as a news organization. And do it and it's transparent and manner as we can't. That is the statement from our chairman Andy lack and we just learned this moments ago just this morning. As I'm sure you can imagine we are devastated and we are still processing. All of us. And I would tell you right now we do not know more than what I just shared with you. But we will be covering this story as reporters as journalists I'm sure we will be learning more details in the hours and days to come. And we promised we will share that with you. And what I mean. You know for the moment all we can scenes that we are heartbroken. I'm heartbroken and that he is my dear dear friend and my partner and he is loved by many many people here. And I'm heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story and any other women who have their own stories to tell. And we are grappling with anti lament that so many people have faced these past few weeks. How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved aptly. And I don't know the answer to that but I do know that this reckoning that so many organizations have been going through is important. It's long overdue. And it must result in workplaces where all women all people feel safe and respected. As painful as it is this moment in our culture and this change. Had to happen. Yeah it did this is a very tough morning. For both of us some I've known Matt for fifteen years and I've loved him as a friend as a colleague and again just like you were saying some damage it's hard to reconcile. What we are hearing with the man who we know who walks in this of building every single day. We're both spoken of with the news kind of pre dawn and were trying to process it and trying to make sense of limit and it'll take some time for that you were processing with all due. At home and he's and we've promised you the chance you can be straightforward well and continue this important conversation absolutely. And it's no real way to do this at this show has been on the air for more than 65 years and we're here because of you for us to bring it and so we're gonna do that. We keep doing it doing together on us and the crew when people that love fishing yet. And so we'll go on is it relevant news and our top story. In New York correspondent errand to terse ski covering the news that's spread quickly. It was NBC news at first formal complaints regarding sexual harassment that they need to get our it is more than twenty years but the network. But the memo also said they were led to believe. It was not. On you're engaged in this kind of behavior. So this was inappropriate sexual behavior according to our user. And NBC news you very quickly to fire him Mets and now moment that to Deschanel went out here you're at Rockefeller was. They must've had. Pretty good proof you don't have to just to put him on leave but to actually terminate him. Well there's apparently went on and 2814. And and and look people in NBC every. Fire leapt at the capitol we go along our producer had been fired or having a consent. Chipped with a subordinate without disclosing management. And and that was against and the C come up policy. And so this seems like something that would be far more beer and an NBC news move very quickly. To terminate in not following the path at CBS in our. Spending Charlie Rose and I'm going drill hole during the oral to make the decision. But cutting off you know cutting the cord entirely. Now oh we know there is one complaints but is their believed to be morrow what can we learn from that statement that was given out by NBC. And BC's president said in that statement that. Though this was the first formal complaint it inappropriate sexual behavior. It they were led to believe executive led to believe that it was not the first time he did it go that that's something that and you seatbelt it could not. Aren't when this was announced at 7 o'clock this morning on The Today Show one on the air. How did it how is it perceived. Well many in the in the crowd were shocked immunity is not on the basis of an adapter in an arc of we're on the air and they said they had ordered it or not long before. I woke up this morning so it was kept very quiet. And and and only became a known in in the media I think two minutes before that and Asia. The fairway note when the New York Times reporter Jim Gutenberg. Avenues on Twitter but but that was. Oh remarkably swift. Out tonight I think it's the Rockefeller tree lighting right and wasn't as an NBC host that show. Usually isn't look he's been the face of NBC that it is so you know for a long time after Brian Williams but does the nightly news under cloud. You know Matt Lauer has been involved in in Thanksgiving parade tree lighting the the Olympics coverage. So he has been a base of the network and so it's undoubtedly a difficult decision NBC news. But clearly they felt that the eighth here. Deserved it. Some insight now from a long time television journalist and current professor. But they debate and it certainly soon and how quickly NBC react. Mike I go is a communication professor at SUNY for Dona and former long time buffalo broadcaster. You read the statement in the NBC president. The detailed statement they got was Monday evening news on Wednesday. And it clearly changed the whole tone compared what's happened in the past when you think the Harvey Weinstein to world and certainly a Bill O'Reilly what it's obviously it seems that. Your talent going forward when it comes to sexual harassment and sexual discrimination in the form of sexual misbehavior. It did does that surprise you don't when you think of bill Riley Roger Ailes or some of these instances even really Charlie Rose that kind of took a a with Matt Lauer how big of a name he was and still is that this was. Done so quickly is that surprising. Well but an entity to consider what's gone on an engineer Harvey Weinstein can't control it Bill O'Reilly to choke again in deeper deeper deeper and Allred when people like O Reilly and whatnot were protected because your great revenue generators for the networks but now the network to see you know boy oh boy this and get that and we start losing advertising what notch. And the economic losses much higher so obviously has zero talent so important and that's going to be turned. Is this another silica a seismic shift here that were kind of witnessing right now cultural moment for the country. Oprah sure you know sexual harassment ethnic sexual harassment Willis have been on the books for years the state of total of course many companies have their own policies and you know it used to be seen that the victims. We're coming in and now they hope trends change in the other direction deeply taking seriously it has become more than pirated goods from companies all across the United States and hopefully around the world as well. Do you think there's a reason we're seeing this in the news media I I guess as often as we're seeing it in. Why Hollywood and in Washington. Well I think people who work in the news media this year more high profile and certainly have a lot more re actually different types of people and also I think it's easier creative posted for information it's faster. Russia and the climate so media nowadays. Everybody wants information so quickly and people should all sorts of stuff on the trail begins. Now is a former TV time Mike had to be a scramble for the network this morning as they were going on the air with this can you imagine. Yeah especially you know you know Savannah Guthrie apparently was you know pretty much held cheers now local machine shaken up but just when you get amusing that some work with tree years. Regardless of what happens when the bees sexual behavior and are serious illness and had to shock. And it turns its its mixed feelings because the one hand your duties and this person to report the news of another and you feel betrayed and Christian lemon inserts its. Every typical put on your professional face and do it that's typical situation Douglas and I respect. The do you see do you think we'll see Matt flower again or will we just have to wait for the details of this complaint to come out Sinn yeah Herbert us understand more. You know Brian Williams the anchor. Was discredited. For low lying about an Iraqi war coverage you know they cannot conclude attic but that was that's a correction of its most serious matter. And they kept put off for awhile they put him back in a Mitsubishi I don't think you can see anymore by that it. Kyle and and tonight I mean of all days for this to happen tonight is that big NBC Rockefeller Center Christmas lights Matt Lauer was like. That's the central hosts a bad thing for years. I notice that many of the media coverage has been made a great point there is certain irony to it that this outcomes than they have you know Rockefeller Center tree. Glen pretty interest the we're back tomorrow. That's 930 in 716. We're back tomorrow with a net a radiation from the studios of WD EA and buffalo law.
